Solid State Chemistry
Human Society is increasingly dependent on advanced solid state materials, whether these are semi-conductors, metals, high Tc superconductors, polymers, catalysts, composites, magnetic materials, fast ion conductors, hydrogen storage materials, amorphous materials, molecular magnets or nano-materials, solid state chemistry has played pivotal role in tailor-making the materials. The great skills of solid state chemists in developing methods of synthesis and their understanding of the structure-property relationship has made it possible to design materials which have specific structure and properties with wide range of applications. Solid state chemistry is a multi-disciplinary subject and forms the life line of materials science. It has played a great role in materials development in wide ranging fields of strategic importance such as atomic energy, space, defence, energy security, electronics and so on.
The Association (ISCAS)
The Indian Association of Solid State Chemists and Allied Scientists (ISCAS) was founded on March 4, 1998. It is a registered society with its registered office at Jammu. Donations to the Association (ISCAS) are income tax exempted under section 80G.
In addition to a large number of annual and student members, the Association has about 400 life members from about fifty leading universities of the country and abroad; BARC, Mumbai; Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Trivandrum; six IITs; Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and many other leading private and autonomous organizations. The membership is open to scientists/academia, working in solid state chemistry and allied areas. The aims and objectives of the Association include:
- To popularize and promote teaching and research in solid state chemistry and allied areas.
- To promote understanding and co-operation amongst the academia/scientists working in this area and disseminate information/knowledge through:
(i) seminars, symposia. conferences and workshops, and
(ii) publication of news bulletin/journal and abstracting service. - Help universities and other institutions in the design and development of courses of study and syllabi in solid state chemistry.
- To train the future generation scientists in this subject to face the challenges of the materials development.
- To interact/co-operate with other institutions/societies working in India and abroad for promotion of solid state chemistry/materials science and allied areas.
- To provide research facilities at the ISCAS Institute of Solid State and Materials Science, Jammu University Campus, Jammu, for research in solid state chemistry and materials science.
